This week’s theme for the Weekly Virtual Book Club for Kids is SPACE!  We decided it would be fun to create a star art project for our activity.

Our featured book is How to Catch a Star by Jeffers Oliver Did you see the other books featured this month?  Click here to see our May Book List.

How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers

The story is about a boy who loved stars very much so he decided to catch one of his very own. The adorable picture books takes readers on the challenges of waiting for them to shine and the various way a young boy creates to catch the beautiful star. Finally, just when the boy is ready to give up, he learns that sometimes things aren’t where, or what, we expect them to be with an adorable surprise friend at the end.

How to Make your Own Star Stamps for Kids Art

The kids art project we’re sharing today is for someone very special in May.  It’s a perfect art project for Moms and for Teachers.  Here’s a sweet way for a child to thank someone for helping them SHINE using the theme of STARS.  Here’s what you’ll need to make your own Star Stamp.

Directions for Star Stamps Craft

1.  Create your own handmade card for a special mom this mother’s day by starting out with a handwriting note.  We wrote our own message but you can get creative and write your own star themed message too for MOM.

Here’s what we wrote:

Mom thank you for helping me SHINE
Love,
{Insert child’s Name}
Writing Mom for Star themed Mothers' Day Card

You can have Dad or big sister write out the text for younger children to copy from.

2. The next step is to have the child draw a picture of them with their MOM.  You could even include a printed out photos of the two of them as a keepsake as well for inside.

3. It’s super easy to make your own star stamp!  The shape of a star is fairly difficult for small children to make so making a stamp together gives them a chance to create stars again and again.  Cut out a star from the Peek and Stick Foam and attach to a recycled lid.

Older kids can draw it out on the foam sheet and cut it themselves for an added personalized touch.

BONUS STAR STAMP IDEA: We also did a second star stamp but cutting around the edges of the star to make the outline of a smaller star stamp featured below.

4. The next step is to use glue to put onto the star shape to create stars on the card.
TIP: We ended up dipping our finger into the glue to make it more exact.

You could also add glitter to the SHINE portion of the card too if you wanted more BLING!

5. Then we stepped outside to have a little fun with our Gold Glitter. We actually had a tray below it as well to capture the glitter to use for some additional star themed projects.  Once dry to help it adhere better to the keepsake you can spray it with hairspray.

6. Once the glue dried we added an outline around the stars to make them more defined.  Honestly I think because I was taking photos the glue dried a bit quicker.  If your child did this on their own I think the edges would have come out more clear.

7.  Using the second star stamp, which was an outline of a star.  You can dip the star stamp into the glue plate and then stamp around the card.  Immediately place glitter on those areas to create your own Star Themed Mother’s Day Card.

Here’s how adorable it turned out up close.  My daughter actually made the card to give to her teacher so that she could surprise someone special with it.  This would be a cute idea for a Mother’s Day Card, Teacher Appreciation or End of Year Thank you Card for Teachers.

Star Themed Mothers’ Day Ideas

My daughter seem to be planning a little Star Themed Mother’s Day.  I’m noticed from my storage they’ve pulled some  Edible Glitter for a Shimmery Snack. Guess it has something to do with my Star Cookie Cutter they pulled from the kitchen cabinet.  Plus in my craft closet, they are using my Star Hole Puncher
Star Cookie Cutter.  I have a feeling the star banner we made that hangs in my daughters room might be used for decorations too.
