In this guide, we will go over how you can change the default alarm sound on your Google Home or Google Nest speaker.
How to Set a General Alarm
Setting an alarm on any Google Home-enabled speaker is actually very straightforward. In fact, all you need to do is to say a command, and Google Assistant will automatically set a general alarm (with default sound) for you. Here are some of the Google Home voice commands you can use to do so:
- Hey Google, set an alarm for 8:45 p.m. tomorrow.
- Hey Google, wake me up at 6 a.m.
- Hey Google, set an alarm for 9 p.m. called finish homework.
- Hey Google, set an alarm for 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
- Hey Google, set an alarm for 5:15 p.m. every day.
- Hey Google, set an alarm every Monday through Friday at 6:30 a.m.
- Hey Google, set an alarm in 5 minutes.

Setting a Music Alarm on Google Home or Google Nest
Before creating a music alarm, make sure that you have your preferred streaming service linked to your Google Home app for iOS or Android and set it as your default provider. Once you have finished setting up the default music player on your phone, you can now make your smart speaker play your favorite music as your alarm tone.
Simply say, "Hey Google, set a media alarm for 10 in the morning tomorrow."
Google Assistant will then ask you what you want to play, and you can reply with your song request.
You can experiment by requesting any singer, band, composer, or playlist for your music alarms. You can also set your alarm to play a specific radio station or genre you like—just be sure to say the proper name in your voice commands. Here are a few example commands you can try to create your music alarm:
- Hey Google, set Taylor Swift alarm in 30 minutes.
- Hey Google, set Kill This Love alarm for 7 a.m. tomorrow.
- Hey Google, set My 199.5 radio alarm for 8 a.m. on Monday.
It's worth noting that if your Google Home or Google Nest Nest speaker isn't connected to a Wi-Fi network at the time of your music alarm, you will only hear the default alarm sound instead of the music you've requested.
Using Character Alarm Sound
If you feel like listening to music won't make you get up from bed, Google also offers a so-called character alarm in place of the general alarm. This works the same way as music alarms, but instead of a song, your Google Home or Google Nest speaker will play a character's voice.
The character alarms are actually meant for kids' use, but feel free to set it up as your alarm, too, if you feel like it. You can use the following characters:
- Lego City
- Lego Life
- Lego Friends
- Hatchimals

To create a character alarm, simply say the following voice commands:
- Hey Google, set a Raphael alarm for 2:30 p.m. every day.
- Hey Google, set a Lego Friends alarm in 3 minutes.
- Hey Google, set a Hatchimals alarm for 8:10 a.m. on Saturday.
Note that as of this writing, the character alarm is only available in English in the U.S. and Canada and on Google Home, Google Home Mini, Google Home Max, Google Nest Mini, Google Nest Audio, Google Nest Hub, and Google Nest Hub Max.
