Cotton Candy Melt and Pour Soap Recipe

I always splurge on a big bag of cotton candy at the county fair each year.  It tastes great, and it also smells amazing.

For a healthier option, we love cotton candy grapes.  They aren't easy to find around here, but I snag them when I see them at the grocery store.

We also love the smell of cotton candy, so I wanted to use it in a soap for myself and the girls.

Understanding Melt and Pour Soap

Melt and pour soap is a popular soap-making method that involves melting pre-made soap bases and adding your desired ingredients to create customized soap bars.

Unlike cold process soap making, which requires working with lye, melt and pour soap allows you to skip the chemical reaction and jump straight into the creative part of soap making.

Advantages of using melt and pour soap bases:

  • Ease of use: Melt and pour soap bases are convenient and beginner-friendly, making them ideal for those new to soap making.
  • Safety: Since the saponification process has already taken place, there's no need to handle lye, reducing the risk of accidents.
  • Versatility: Melt and pour soap bases can be easily customized with various additives, colors, and fragrances.  Learn more about melt and pour soap additives.
  • Quick results: Unlike other soap-making methods, melt and pour soap doesn't require weeks of curing time; you can start using your soap as soon as it solidifies.

When selecting a melt and pour soap base for your cotton candy soap bars, consider factors such as:

  • Transparency: Decide whether you want a transparent or opaque soap base, depending on the final look you wish to achieve.  Keep in mind that a clear soap base will give you vibrant colors.  White soap base will be subdued.
  • Ingredients: Look for high-quality soap bases that are free from harsh chemicals and contain nourishing ingredients for the skin.
  • Melting point: Different soap bases have different melting points, so choose one that suits your melting method and desired consistency.

I recommend using melt and pour soap from HB Oils or Simply Earth.

Cotton Candy Soap Ingredients and Supplies

To get started on your cotton candy soap-making journey, you'll need to gather the following ingredients and supplies:

Ingredients:

  • Melt and pour soap base: Choose a high-quality base suitable for your desired texture and transparency.  I used both white and clear soap.
  • Polysorbate 80: Polysorbate 80 is optional, but I like to add it to soap and bath bombs.  It helps disperse the colorant and scent throughout the soap since it's an emulsifier.
  • Fragrance oils: Opt for fragrance oils that capture the essence of cotton candy, such as vanilla, strawberry, and sugary scents.  Nature's Oils has a natural cotton candy fragrance oil.  Or try one of these essential oil blends that smell like candy.
  • Colorants: I like to use mica to color my soap because it doesn't bleed like some liquid colorants.  I used white, pink, and blue mica.
  • Skin safe glitter: I added pink and blue skin safe glitter for some extra sparkle.  This is optional.  I like to use a biodegradable glitter.

Supplies:

  • Microwave or double boiler: Depending on your preferred melting method, ensure you have either a microwave-safe container or a double boiler setup.
  • Heat-resistant containers: Use separate heat-resistant containers for melting the soap base and mixing in fragrance oils and colorants.  I used three soap containers to make three colors.
  • Soap molds: Look for fun and whimsical soap molds or choose simple rectangular molds for classic bars.  I used this cute swirl mold.
  • Mixing utensils: Have a dedicated set of heat-resistant utensils, such as silicone spatulas or stainless steel spoons, for stirring and mixing.
  • Spray bottle of rubbing alcohol: This will help eliminate air bubbles that may form while pouring the soap.

Melting and Pouring the Soap Base

Now that your have the ingredients for your cotton candy soap, it's time to start melting and pouring the soap base. Follow these step-by-step instructions for a successful process:

Step #1

Begin by cutting the melt and pour soap base into small, uniform chunks using a sharp knife. Smaller chunks will melt more quickly and evenly.  Place the white soap in one container and divide the clear soap between the other two containers.

Step #2

Choose either the microwave or double boiler method to melt the soap base. If using the microwave, place the soap chunks in a microwave-safe container and heat in short bursts, stirring in between until completely melted. If using a double boiler, fill the lower pot with water and place it on the stove over low heat. Put the soap chunks in the upper pot and stir until melted.  Melt each container separately because the soap will cool between layers.  I started with the white soap first.

Melt the white soap and add 1 teaspoon of Polysorbate 80, 1/3 of the fragrance oil or essential oils, and white mica.  Stir well.  Pour into the mold and spritz with rubbing alcohol.  Let sit until cool before proceeding to the next step.

Step #3

Melt one bowl of clear soap to create the next layer.  Add pink mica, glitter, fragrance, and Polysorbate 80 and stir well.  Pour over the white layer and spray with rubbing alcohol.  Let cool completely before proceeding to the next step.

Step #4

Melt the final bowl.  Add the blue colorant, Polysorbate 80, glitter, and scent.  Stir well.  Pour over the pink layer and spray with rubbing alcohol.  Let cool completely.  Once cool, unmold and enjoy!

Tips and Troubleshooting

To ensure successful cotton candy soap making, consider these useful tips and troubleshooting strategies:

  • Use a digital scale: Accurate measurements are crucial in soap making. Invest in a digital scale to weigh your ingredients precisely.
  • Experiment with layering: Create a visually appealing cotton candy soap by pouring different colors in layers. Allow each layer to cool and solidify before pouring the next.  Here are some tips for layering melt and pour soap.
  • Avoid overheating: Be mindful of the soap base's melting point and avoid overheating, as it can affect the quality and appearance of your soap.
  • Addressing air bubbles: If you notice air bubbles in your poured soap, lightly spritz the surface with  rubbing alcohol and use a toothpick to pop any remaining bubbles.
  • Troubleshooting discoloration: Some fragrance oils may cause discoloration in the soap. To prevent this, consider using a vanilla color stabilizer or choose fragrance oils specifically formulated for melt and pour soap making.
  • Ensure any essential oils that you use are safe for kids if you make cotton candy soap for kids.
