When I was in middle school, the worst phrase you could utter in my direction was “be yourself.” It always worked like clockwork. I’d beg people to like me, to give me a chance, often to the point that it’d be a cry for help. People made fun of me. They’d reject me. I’d lash out in rage, beat the crap out of someone, and I’d ask the principal after I’d get my detention slip, “How do I make people like me?!” A shrug and, “Be yourself,” was all I’d ever hear. Oh, how I hate this phrase! By and large, this was the worst advice I ever got from anyone. The truth is, I’d never tell anyone this...
If you're a college kid who comes home to find a young girl passed out in the middle of your living room, what would you do? The easiest and most logical answer is to call 911. But that decision isn't quite so easy in "Emergency," a new film from director Carey Williams and writer K.D. Da'Vila that's playing virtually as part of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Even in the wake of Black Lives Matter, calling the police isn't exactly the most desirable solution for minorities in an emergency situation when it potentially involves the unfortunately and shamefully likely outcome of getting shot, or at the very least, being body slammed to the ground with a gun pointed at your face....

Learning to navigate social relationships is a skill that is critical for surviving in human societies. For babies and young children, that means learning who they can count on to take care of them. MIT neuroscientists have now identified a specific signal that young children and even babies use to determine whether two people have a strong relationship and a mutual obligation to help each other: whether those two people kiss, share food, or have other interactions that involve sharing saliva. In a new study, the researchers showed that babies expect people who share saliva to come to one another’s aid when one person is in distress, much more so than when people share toys or interact in other ways...
Technology has changed our lives and it continues to do so every single day. Since the dawn of time, man has used resources around him to to build shelters and craft primitve axes. Now we have super computers in our pockets and the rise of AI is upon us to take us into the next era. Perhaps I’m writing this post as a kind of digital time capsule and maybe one day a future man or woman from the year 3042 will look back and laugh at our current technology. Some people will tell you that technology has changed our lives for the better and some will say the opposite but everyone will agree that it has changed our...
