Happy New Year! Our family enjoyed a couple of weeks at home over the break. We ate lots of food, shoveled lots of snow, opened lots of gifts, read lots of books, and slept a lot — I’m not complaining! The still face experiment is disturbing. At first, a parent and baby play together, dad smiling and cooing, baby clapping her hands and laughing. Then, prompted by the researcher, the dad turns his face away from the stroller and when he turns back his face is completely expressionless. Baby tries to get dad to smile again, but he keeps up the flat affect, remaining neutral and unresponsive. Within a few minutes, the child dissolves, crying, squirming, and desperately trying to make a connection. On a second prompt, dad turns away again, and when he looks at baby again he’s his normal self, soothing the baby who quickly recovers. Baby forgets all and gets back to playtime as if nothing happened....

Since their popular ZZQ restaurant opened in 2018, owners Chris Fultz and Alex “Orange” Graf have been fielding requests for new locations across the Mid-Atlantic. In this braille activity for sighted students, we’ll make a sample braille cards using bumps that can be purchased on Amazon or through a braille supplier. Braille is a way for visually impaired people to read. This system uses raised dots on paper to form letters and words. These raised dots are read by the visually impaired with their fingertips, typically, the index fingers are used. Braille is read from left to right across the page.
