A considerable number of diseases often occur due to what we put into our body. People often complain that despite leaving processed food and eating healthy, they’re having digestion problems. While it might hurt some people, it is mostly because the kitchen hygiene isn’t up to mark. While we all wash our hands and take care of the basic rules that we’ve always heard, it is due to the rules we don’t know that contribute to the illness. I started changing my eating decisions a while back and switched to homemade meals. In the beginning, despite trying to eat clean and healthy, I couldn’t maintain my health; it was then that my doctor advised me to take care of kitchen hygiene with much needed attention.
Here are a few tips I have been following. Homemade meals have made my life better after I started following the rules mentioned below. Check out www.pestwiki.com, if you want to know how to make your food source from your garden free from pest attacks.
1. Maintain Personal Hygiene
Before you go into the kitchen, the first thing that you should be concerned about is your personal hygiene. Remember to wash your hands before you go into the kitchen. People often keep a few dollars in the kitchen cabinet in case they order something and they need it. Money can be the dirtiest thing you can bring in the kitchen.
Have you ever wondered how many people touch the same money you have? Remember to keep cash out of the kitchen. Apart from that, make sure to cover your hair while cooking. If you end up finding hair in your pasta, you’re going to flip out.
Remember never to wear jewelry in the kitchen. Not only can it accidentally fall into the batter, but it can also be a cause of transferring germs from one site to another. We mostly keep our rings on when we go to the bathroom, and even though we wash our hands, rings and bracelets are bound to carry a lot of germs.
2. Never Let Water Stand
Standing water is also a significant hygiene concern in the kitchen. It can lead to the buildup of germs in the kitchen. You should drain the water collector under your dish rack at least three times a day.
Apart from that, if you use a wet sponge to clean the kitchen counters, make sure that you turn on the fans so they can get dry. When the things in the kitchen are damp, and there’s a humid environment, it can lead to a flux in bacteria growth. It can also lead to the birth of mosquitos, which aren’t just dirty but can also cause severe health problems.
3. Clean Places That Are Hard to Reach
Another rule you should follow is not to slack while cleaning the kitchen. There are often places that we let go because they are hard to reach or we just think that it would take a lot of effort, for example, the dishwasher, sink, behind the kitchen counters etc. Such places accumulate dirt and food spatter every day, and if they’re left unclean, they’re bound to end up causing bacterial diseases.
4. Maintain Cleanliness of Food Storage Units
Apart from the kitchen, the places where you store the food should also be cleaned regularly. Remember to clean the fridge at least once a month. Take out all the edibles and scrape the ice from the freezer. Wash it thoroughly and then let it dry before you place the food items back inside.
Remember to take the plug out while cleaning and make sure it isn’t wet before you put it back in. Apart from the fridge, also make sure that the containers you store your food in are clean and dry.
5. Cook at Optimum Temperature
While this may seem a little vague, you should read along. Every food depending on the condition that it was in, before you put in on the stove, has a different optimum temperature. While your steak may seem adequately cooked, if it isn’t cooked at the right temperature, chances are that different bacteria might be transferred from the food source to your stomach.
If you have a garden and you use pesticides, you should wash your vegetables at least 5-6 times before use and even after that, you should make sure that you check for the optimum temperature so that any chemical residue can be eliminated.
6. Clean Appliances Frequently
Another important rule that everyone must follow is to clean the appliances that you use in the kitchen. Washing your hands will be of no use if the appliances that you use are still dirty. Remember to clean the sandwich maker, blender, juicer and other appliances as well.
Even if you think you’ll use it again in 2-3 hours, you should still clean it before the second use. Make sure that the appliances are dry before you put them away in the cupboard. When appliances are stored while they are still damp they often end up out of order.
The above-mentioned rules have worked wonders for me. When I first decided to cook for myself, it was pretty hard to manage with my routine, but after a month or so I got used to it. Remember to not quit! In the beginning, I would pick up the phone to order take out and then fight myself to get up and make something, even if it was just a sandwich. If you think I’ve missed anything that can help with kitchen hygiene, feel free to mention below.
