To be creative is to bring something new, and valuable, into our lives and our world. You don’t have to be an Einstein or a Shakespeare to be creative. You need to play the best game you can, in whatever field is calling you, and come up with some new moves, and play so hard you don’t think of your game as just work (and may never want to retire from it). What makes a world-class creative remains mysterious. But new research in neuroscience is telling us interesting things about how the association centers of the brain work when new ideas are coming through, confirming that one characteristic of creative people is that they make connections between things that other...
Just about everybody agrees: Baseball games are too long. But they don't necessarily agree on what to do about it. Major League Baseball last week approved sweeping new rules that will go into effect for the 2023 season. The bases will get slightly bigger and defensive shifts will no longer be allowed. But the most significant update is the implementation of a pitch clock that will give pitchers a mere 15 seconds — 20 if a runner is on base — between pitches. Fail, and they get charged with a ball. (Hitters who aren't in the box on time will be charged with a strike.) That should significantly shorten games, which now run more than three hours on average. "It's...
This simple salt lava lamp is a fun twist on the more traditional homemade lava lamp that uses a fizzy tablet. The salt lava lamp doesn’t look quite a good, and isn’t as reusable but is still a nice science activity for learning about density. You’ll need A glass jar or glass Vegetable oil – or other cheap cooking oil Water Food colouring -optional Salt Instructions Fill the glass or jar about three quarters full. Top up with vegetable oil to almost the top. Sprinkle salt slowly for about 10 seconds over the top of the oil. Sit back and watch! Keep adding more salt to keep it going. Why does a salt lava lamp work? Oil floats on water...
This mini science investigation shows you how to make a DIY barometer to measure air pressure. Air pressure can be used to predict the weather and is one of many factors used by meteorologists. What does low or high pressure mean for the weather? Low pressure usually means wet, cloudy, rainy weather while high pressure is an indicator of dry and cool weather. DIY Barometer Barometers are used to measure atmospheric pressure. What is atmospheric pressure? The Earth has a layer of air surrounding it. This air has weight and presses down the Earth. At higher altitudes the air is thinner so air pressure is lower. A To make a barometer you will need Jar or coffee can Elastic band...
The subject of our dissertation was born in Brooklyn during 1930 as Robert Oscar Blechman . . . or some such variation on that theme. Wikipedia touts R. O. Blechman thusly: American animator, illustrator, children’s-book author, graphic novelist and editorial cartoonist whose work has been the subject of retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art and other institutions. He was inducted into the Art Directors Hall of Fame in 1999. Every word of that is true except ‘animator’, because R. O. Blechman is not an animator. Profiles, bios, and write-ups repeatedly claim he is. Why? His parents supported Bob Blechman’s artistic leanings and he attended the High School of Music and Art, going on to Oberlin College. Upon graduating in...
