Spring 2022/Jessica Frierson If your children are anything like mine, they love to spend time outdoors. Rain or shine, cold and snowy (especially snowy!) or warm and dry, they can’t wait to run outside. If they aren’t outdoors, there’s a good chance they can be found at a window watching one of our bird feeders, on the lookout for the coyotes they hear howling, or laughing at the antics of a couple of mischievous squirrels. Our house is full of bowls of rocks they’ve collected, insect specimens that have been preserved, sea shells gathered from a beach trip, and a hodgepodge of acorns, pine cones, bird feathers, leaves, and even animal bones. Chemistry is the study of matter. Matter is basically anything that occupies space and has mass! We use chemistry everyday and everywhere. When you bake a cake the ingredients are chosen, measured and then cooked so they react together to create something tasty (or not, depending on how you combine ingredients and cook them ). In that first year, from March 2020-March 2021, we safely visited 45 school districts and 29 community colleges in person. As we traveled, our audience increased by 142% in 2020 and kept growing in 2021, a year when interest in news declined and news engagement “fell off a cliff” for other outlets. In 2021, our audience included 1,171,164 individuals with 2,021,970 pageviews collectively. The Assembly, a new digital magazine about North Carolina, calls our reach “an impressive number for a single-issue outlet.” This is the story of how one news organization built an architecture...
