Family Schooling: Progress Report and Plans for the Summer

A lot of people have been asking me about home schooling lately-- especially what books I like and how we organize things. I thought it would be easiest to just explain what we do and my plans for the summer/fall here. Normally, we have a Home School Review meeting with the County education department around this time of year anyway.  Some people dread their reviews, but I like having an opportunity to do a little self assessment and see how we are doing. Our reviewer has become our friend and we really like her too, which helps make it all more fun. Usually, I do not expect to do much school work in the summer,  too many other fun playdate opportunities!...

DIY Slingshot made with cardboard tubes

This DIY slingshot is very easy to make and only requires a couple of cardboard tubes, elastic bands and a pencil! How to Make Oobleck

How to Make Oobleck Hi there, this is Katie. Have you ever made oobleck with your kids or when you were a kid? My 1st grader made it for a science activity this past week and loved it. My teen also came to play with it. What is oobleck? It’s a mixture of cornstarch and water. That’s it. But the consistency is solid when pressure is applied (or you play with it) and then it turns into a liquid when you’re not playing with it. It’s the funnest, weirdest thing to play with and a great cheap science experiment for the kids to explore. This thrifty experiment costs less than $1 to do. The cornstarch was 97 cents at Walmart...
